スピルバーグの映画『未知との遭遇』（1977年）のマザーシップのモデルメーカーとして一躍脚光を浴び、その後も同監督の『1941』（1979年）で精巧なハリウッド大通りのミニチュアセットを監修したグレッグ・ジーン。

その彼がまだ無名のころ、モデルメーカー兼プロップマンとして参加したパロディ・スペース・オペラ『フレッシュ・ゴードン Space Wars』（1974年）で作ったのが、このピストルである。
悪役ワン皇帝の手下たちが使用した。
最低予算ながら、アナログSFXの見せ場満載の怪作。
中でもこのピストルは映画のオゲレツさを象徴するものとして忘れがたいものがあるのだった。
店主とグレッグとは35年来の付き合いで、いまではロサンゼルス郊外でのどかに暮らす彼に、フレッシュ・ゴードン・ピストルの複製を作りたいと持ちかけた時は「こんなもの誰も買わないよ」と言われてしまった。
本当にそうなのか、もうじき結論が出るわけだ。これは、製作時間も製作費もほとんどない最低予算映画の現場で生まれたSci-Fi ピストルの突然変異種である。
その気楽な手作り感を再現することに全力を注いだ。
けっして滑らかでない表面処理、一部に残るモールド・ライン、ラフな塗装や仕上げなども、オリジナルの雰囲気に近づけた結果である。

When he was still relatively unknown, he participated as a model maker and prop man in the softcore porno/space opera "Flesh Gordon" (1974) for which he created this pistol. It was used by the troops under the antagonist, Emperor Wang. In spite of the low budget, the film was a masterpiece full of examples of excellent analog SFX. As a symbol of the low-class cheesiness of the film, this pistol is an unforgettable gem.
Greg and I have been friends for some 35 years. When I took the pistol to his home somewhere in the suburbs of LA hoping to make a reproduction, he told me, "No one would buy something like this." Whether that is actually the case, we will soon find out.
This is a sudden mutation on the usual sci-fi pistol created on a low-budget movie studio with virtually no production time or funds. We threw our energies into replicating that smooth and easy effect. What you see here in the uneven surface treatment, the mold lines left behind in parts, and the rough paint job are all part of our attempt to approximate the original prop.
